JP Diamonds - Diamond Care
A diamond is one of the strongest natural substances known to man, but even so it requires care. After all, that sparkly stone sat proudly on your finger or hanging from your neck has been specifically chosen for you and should be cared for with the same love.
Your Diamond Engagement Ring
The engagement ring chosen specifically for you has been made up of two remarkable components. The first is obviously the diamond, and the second is the precious metal it sits upon, this can be one of three materials: 18 ct white gold, 18ct yellow gold and of course platinum. Although platinum is extremely tough due to its density, your platinum ring will still scratch, but this does not affect the integrity of the metal itself or indeed the diamond ring itself.
Protection
Although gold and platinum are still quite strong and can provide a secure environment for your diamond, severe knocks and chemicals can loosen or dislodge the diamond and even cause scratches to the metal. Therefore you should try to minimise the risks of these happening by not wearing your ring during certain activities such as D.I.Y, sport etc. and wear gloves when coming into contact with liquids. Exposure due to perspiration and household chemicals during ordinary wear, such as chlorine and hairspray, can accumulate and dull the surface of a diamond, as these substances tend to build up over time, and dirt etc will adhere to the diamond and to the diamond ring.
Storing
The best place to store your ring when you're not wearing it, is in any fabric lined jewellery box (the presentation box is perfect) away from other jewellery, this prevents the metal from being scratched further.
Cleaning
From our personal experience we have found it best to use any ammonia based household cleaner, which is placed in an airtight jar to bring out the natural sparkle. You should leave your diamond jewellery to soak overnight to get the maximum benefit from the cleaning solution. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and gently clean the diamond ring, making sure you also clean underside of the diamond setting itself. Once this is complete rinse with cold water and pat dry (rubbing will cause miniscule scratches that over time will dull the metal).
